It's gonna be a great weekend:

Tonight is my brother's last basketball game of the season, which should definitely be exciting to watch. He's such a stud!

Tomorrow night I'm going to see the Vagina Monologues at UCSD (yay for extra credit in my gender politics class!)

And finally Sunday Night marks the arrival of my very favorite person in the world: Ingrid. She's flying in from Maine for the week and I am SOOOOOO excited. Die Mannschaft wurde endlich wiedervereinigt!

Unemployed No More

After last's semester hectic schedule, I've finally found a job for this upcoming spring semester. I'll be working back at the on-campus coffee shop, Aromas.
I'm pretty excited about this development, but not as excited as I am about my classes:

Life in the Oceans;
International Relations Theory;
Sex, Power & Politics;
Politics of Germany;
US/East Asian Relations.

Let's just say I've got quite a bit of optimism invested in 2006.

Wanted: Song Writer/Composer

I've heard plenty of songs in my day that were dedicated to a specific place (like Carolina in my Mind, Sweet Home Alabama). I've never before understood why someone would feel the need to sing about a place. Now I get it. If I had a musical bone in my body, I'd be occupying myself with song composition right now. ...sigh... Munich.

35 mpg, thank you very much

I'm getting 35 miles per gallon out of my good ole car. The thing is almost 12 years old, yet you gotta go HYBRID to beat that!(and I will, someday) Let me make it now be known, that I am energy efficient.*

Speaking of energy efficiency, I just heard about some interesting new measures taken by the Japanese government in that regard. Tokoyo, the world's most populous metropolian area, is seeking ways to increase energy efficiency. The government started a campaign this summer urging workers to 'dress down' at work so as to reduce the high demand for air conditioning in office buildings. Not only was this campaign successful in terms of the saving the city's energy, but it also boosted sales in the city's menswear market. The Japanese government is incorporating the same philosophy this winter by encouraging sweaters, and the like, in the workplace.

The story sounds awfully humorous until I stop to think about how many office buildings I've entered over the past summers, in which I wish I'd worn a parka. In Southern California especially, that sory of extreme climate control is a waste of energy as well as uncomfortable.

I guess I like to think in a slightly different way nowadays: Es gibt kein schlechtes Wetter, nur schlechte Kleidung. (There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.)


*broad definition of energy efficient is used here. this is based on american standards, which are like the worst standards to ever go by.

Flood Catastrophe in Bavaria

The Bavarians - especially in the small villages that I love so dearly - are currently struggling through some serious flooding. It sounds rather severe, although no deaths have yet been recorded in Germany (the same cannot be said for Austria or Switzerland).

To be home

I walked away from my time in Munich much closer to being the person that I want to be. It just so happens that this person is, at this time, a confused one. I'm learning to deal with a 'new me' in 'old surroundings.' But hey, who said I wasn't up for a challenge?

Back in Action

Yes, I am back in action. Back to having a working computer and too much time at my disposal.

Spring Fever

Ok, so this Spring weather is really affecting my mood. I'm all smile from ear to ear. I can't help it.

Today 14 new JYMers were sent our way. I've met a few of them and they seem like nice kids. It's a weird feeling...kinda like we're the upperclassman to these newbies. We're having a big bonfire tonight in the Englisher Garten to welcome them. It should be fun.

We're going to Switzerland for the last weekend of this neverending Spring Break. Interlaken to be exact. I can't wait to breathe the fresh Alpine air and eat some fun Fondue. Then back to school on Monday. Wow, time sure does fly by.

Night Train to Venice

I LOVE German trains. If you've haven't ridden on a German train, you haven't lived. They are so much better than all other trains in the world!!! (Ok, that could be a stretch, since I don't know about Asian trains. I do have a hunch that they could be nice too.) I've been on a French night train once before...and it was not cool. But this German night train was so comfortable and cute...Look! I'm sleeping like a baby!

Boats, boats, boats...

I would really love to work in Venice. I think even the job of garbage collector would be so much more fun. You'd probably get to drive a boat and pick up the trash with a big pool skimmer thingy. Wow, that'd be an awesome job. I saw a boat full of produce pull up and sell stuff to the locals. I saw many boats carrying barrels of wine. Then of course there are the boat taxis and the other means of public transportation on the water. I love it.

VENICE

One could describe Venice as anticlimatic. One could describe it as small. But I'll tell you one thing, it is absolutely unique. And I appreciate it for it's uniqueness and don't demand much more out of it. For this reason, Venice and I get along. I love Venice.

Berlin Reflections

Well, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that the Berlin Seminar was entirely draining. It really was. Eleven of us in a little 3 bedroom apartment (if you can call it that) with one bathroom. Yeah, that did create a bit of tension...but it worked out well. Our days were planned from about 8am to midnight. Every day. For 8 days straight. It was intense.

We went to 6 theater productions. They were the weirdest things I have ever had the privelege to see. I cannot even explain. We saw more of Berlin than most people see in a month. We saw things that only Herr Soeder could show us.

I learned so much. I learned that I love traveling to places where I speak the language. I learned so much about Prussian culture, specifically in the context of the Berlin's tulmultuous history. I learned how to deal with condescending German tourguides. I learned that the Bavarian dialect is so much more pleasing to the ears that the one in Berlin. I learned how to ride the public transportation in Berlin (which is absolutely insane). I learned how to deal with different kinds of people. I learned to respect Herr Soeder, even more that I did before. I learned that Munich is really a special place to me. I learned that I know how to have fun and make the best out of things, no matter where I am.
